After the dramatic reveal of Square Enix’s new Luminous Studio engine, one of the games that seemed like a sure fit for it was the long-awaited Kingdom Hearts 3. It turns out that isn’t the case, as Square Enix has announced that development of Kingdom Hearts 3 has switched over to Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4. The game’s director, Tetsuya Nomura, has stated that the change has initially caused “some difficulty rendering images”, but that they’ll “be able to progress smoothly” with help from Epic Games. This will not be the first Square Enix title to be developed using the Unreal Engine, as it was previously used to develop The Last Remnant, Thief, and Drakengard 3 to name a few. Hopefully, the switch will end up being for the best in the end. Kingdom Hearts 3 is set to release on Playstation 4 and Xbox One.
