Sony Seeking Deal for New Mario Bros. Movie

Sony was hacked back in December 8, resulting in some information leaks. On December 11, BuzzFeed revealed that some of the emails indicate that Sony is in talks with Nintendo to make a Super Mario Bros. movie. The next day, they added that a deal is not finalized, but producer Avi Arad (Spider-Man, Iron Man) claims that the negotiations are “just the beginning,” and seems particularly interested in working on the film.

Sony appears to be aiming for an animated film. Genndy Tartakovsky (Hotel Transylvania, Dexter’s Laboratory, Star Wars: The Clone Wars) was suggested as a possible director for the project.

Strangely enough, no one seems concerned about the fact that Sony’s PlayStation is a competitor with Nintendo in the gaming market. The last Mario movie made was a live-action film from 1993, which starred Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, and Dennis Hopper. It was a sci-fi story which had very little in common with the games, and is widely regarded as one of the worst video game movie adaptations by fans.

Can Sony do a better job? Is there someone else more qualified to make a Mario movie? Can such a movie ever be made right? What do you think? Let us know in the comments section.

I'm an English Major with an emphasis in writing. When I have the free time, I love to play video games. I'll play just about anything, but my specific favorites are side scrollers, action games, and fighting games, specifically the Super Smash Bros. series. I prefer to play as a team, but I'm just as willing to compete, so long as the game is fun.
