Daisy Ridley Confirms Talks for Tomb Raider Movie

Daisy Ridley Lara Croft Tomb Raider

Daisy Ridley, who recently became famous for her role as Rey in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, was recently rumored to be a top choice for the role of Lara Croft in an upcoming Tomb Raider movie. On March 21st, Ridley confirmed that there have been talks of her playing the part, but she hasn’t officially been offered the role. There isn’t even a script just yet.

“I’m waiting for someone to say ‘I want you, let’s do it’,” Ridley said. Her co-star, John Boyega (Finn), has voiced his support for her.

“I played Tomb Raider the game, it’s a new take and I think the movies are going to be based on that version,” Boyega said. He adds that he texted Ridley about the game, saying, “‘this is you!’ and ‘you need to get on that because you could be Lara Croft.’ She should be.”

The last Tomb Raider movies were released in 2001 and 2003, and starred Angelina Jolie as the main character. The first film was, and still is, the highest grossing film adapted from a video game in the US. The upcoming film, directed by Roar Uthaug (The Wave), will tell an origin story, much like the 2013 Tomb Raider game.

“I think making Lara Croft feel like a real human being, that’s definitely something we want to bring to the big screen as well. I think we’ll want to make people relate to Lara as a character. I’m hoping to bring some of my Norwegian sensibilities to the franchise,” Uthaug told IGN in an interview. Writer Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Transformers 5) has also signed on.

No release date or title has been announced yet for the Tomb Raider movie. It will be a collaboration between MGM, GK Films, Warner Bros., and Square Enix. Do you think Ridley would be a good choice? Let us know in the comments section.

I'm an English Major with an emphasis in writing. When I have the free time, I love to play video games. I'll play just about anything, but my specific favorites are side scrollers, action games, and fighting games, specifically the Super Smash Bros. series. I prefer to play as a team, but I'm just as willing to compete, so long as the game is fun.
