Yes, you read that correctly. Continuing its ravenous expansion, Marvel announced earlier today that it is partnering with Square Enix to broaden its Avengers franchise. Simply dubbed “The Avengers Project,” this title is in the hands of Crystal Dynamics, known for the Tomb Raider franchise, and Eidos-Montreal, home of Deus Ex. From the press release:
The Avengers project is being designed for gamers worldwide and will be packed with all the characters, environments, and iconic moments that have thrilled longtime fans of the franchise. Featuring a completely original story, it will introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come. More details on The Avengers project and other games will be announced in 2018
Aside from that and the trailer below, there is little to go on so far. Given the showing in the trailer, it’s reasonable to expect that Marvel is consolidating all of its major characters for this one project. Additionally, the scope of this project–a major partnership combined with two separate AAA studios with a plethora of industry veterans–suggests an effort that goes beyond your run-of-the-mill franchise tie-in, similar to how Batman: Arkham Asylum broke the “awful comic game” curse.
