Call of Duty is returning to its roots.
In the midst of a slow month for gaming news, Activision and Sledgehammer Games have dropped a sneak peek for the highly-anticipated Call of Duty: WWII. The stunning cinematic reveal trailer features plenty of in-game footage for fans to enjoy, and it confirms the franchise’s reversion back to the original style of the very first Call of Duty titles and 2008’s classic World at War.
The game appears to be casting aside the retro sci-fi style of the recent Call of Duty games to seek reinvention through narrative quality and a serious tone. This seems to have struck a cord with the majority of fans, because (at the time of this writing) the hugely popular trailer has an impressive 92% on the YouTube “like” bar. Meanwhile, the Infinite Warfare reveal trailer leveled out with an absolutely abysmal 14% approval rate. Based on this clear shift in the initial audience reaction, it’s safe to assume that Call of Duty has begun to win back its alienated fanbase.
