Scott Cawthon hinted back in June that another Five Nights at Freddy’s game was in the works. Not long afterwards, he posted an update on Steam, claiming that the game has been canceled.
“For the last month or so I’ve been dropping hints about a new game; and it’s true that I’d been working on one (call it FNaF 6 if you’d like.),” Cawthon began. “But after forcing myself to keep working on it […] I realized something- I just don’t want to work on this. With each game’s release, I think the expectations get higher and higher for the next, and rightfully so. […] But that pressure starts to mount, and I fear that I’ve been neglecting other things in my life for the sake of trying to keep up with those mounting expectations.”
Despite no longer working on this game, Cawthon made it clear that he will still develop video games. He just hopes to “get back to what made game-making enjoyable in the first place. It also doesn’t mean that I’m abandoning FNaF. In fact, the first game that I’d like to make would be something for you guys. Remember Foxy Fighters from Update 2? I loved working on that game.” He also suggested that he might “try [his] hand at a pizzeria tycoon game, who knows. The point is that it would be something for fun, and something for the fans. :)”
He also updated fans on other projects in the FNaF universe, claiming that the upcoming movie “is in amazing hands with Blumhouse,” and that he still hopes to create something with VR. Cawthon also promises not to leave fans of the books hanging, but he’s taking a break from the games for now. Hopefully he’ll be ready to make something great after this much-deserved break.
