Back in December of 2014, rumors circulated that Sony was in talks to do an animated film based on the Super Mario Bros. franchise. Though a studio has yet to be confirmed, Nintendo seems to have a genuine interest in seeing another film adaptation. According to Game Informer, Tatsumi Kimishima, the president of Nintendo, has told the Japanese newspaper Kyoto Shimbun that he hopes Nintendo can come to an agreement with a film studio soon. If they can find the right partner, Nintendo hopes to have a movie ready to release in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
As much as some fans might want to forget it, this wouldn’t be the first time Mario has been on the silver screen. In 1993, a live-action Mario movie was made, starring Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, Dennis Hopper, and Samantha Mathis. Unlike the games, the movie was a gritty sci-fi dystopia film that depicted a world similar to Blade Runner. It bombed at the box-office and is often regarded as a perfect example of a video game movie done wrong. Bob Hoskins didn’t have good things to say about the experience either.
Time will tell if Nintendo can get a film studio that will get it right this time. Do you think a good Mario Bros. movie could be made? What studio could make it. Let us know in the comments below.
